Public Affairs Section
Overview
The Public Affairs Section (PAS) handles all aspects of press and cultural relations for the United States Embassy in Nicosia. A staff of eight Americans and Cypriots conducts outreach to a variety of Cypriot audiences. The Public Affairs Officer serves as the Embassy spokesman, and cultural and press specialists develop programs to increase understanding of the United States among all Cypriots. The Bicommunal Support Program and the Information Resource Center round out the section.
Our Mission
Working with the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, PAS aims to strengthen and develop U.S.-Cypriot relations by:
- Communicating U.S. government policies to the Cypriot public
- Creating, promoting and administering educational and cultural
exchange programs aimed at improving relations and increasing
understanding between the people of both communities in Cyprus
and the United States
- Presenting a variety of information on American society in all its complexity so that Cypriots may develop a better comprehension of the United States.
Activities
The Embassy’s Bicommunal Support Program (BSP)
The Embassy’s Bicommunal Support Program (BSP) provides theme-based training programs for Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots in areas of common concern that range from education and media, to youth leadership and combating trafficking in persons. These programs give participants the chance to work together to break down barriers and find practical solutions to island-wide concerns. Since its inception in 2000, BSP has reached thousands of Cypriots through a wide variety of activities. BSP programs are administered by AMIDEAST, a U.S.-based non-profit organization that maintains a staff and office in Cyprus.
In addition to AMIDEAST programs, BSP directly oversees a small-grants fund, which supports bicommunal projects of under $10,000. These grants are intended to help Cypriots support their own bicommunal undertakings in Cyprus. For more information on this program, including grant application guidelines send us an e-mail.
