Counselor for Public Affairs Tom Miller delivered a talk on Media Literacy to an audience of 220 at Easter Mediterranean University on November 13. Mr. Miller described how visuals, headlines, subjects of sentences, and even common versus proper nouns frame stories encouraging readers and viewers to adopt a certain point of view. Mr. Miller also described a common macrostructure of hard news stories and showed how readers could identify missing or omitted stages to detect bias. Student questions focused on ways one could use these techniques to improve reading strategies.
