Embassy Nicosia sponsored its third consecutive Daniel Pearl World Music Days during the week of October 15, 2007.
Events included: a bicommunal seminar for media and communication students on the role of the journalist in conflict zones, a bicommunal workshop on the music industry run by performers Martha Lewis and Eve Polycarpou, and a screening of the HBO documentary on Pearl’s life, “The Journalist and the Jihadi,” all held at the University of Nicosia.
The week culminated in a spectacular concert and poetry slam on October 18 featuring Martha Lewis and Eve Polycarpou and Haji Mike, Zeki Ali, Stephanos Stephanides, and Sonero, which inaugurated the reopening of the American Center in Nicosia, closed for the past nine years following USIA’s merger with the Department of State.
Singing before an audience of 150 Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, and other members of the community, Martha and Eve paid homage to the memory of Daniel Pearl while inspiring hope for the divided island of Cyprus.
